Forest Preserve District of Cook County

The Forest Preserve District of Cook County is the nations largest and oldest forest preserve
system. Established in 1914, the Districts mission is to acquireand holds landsfor the
purpose of protecting and preserving the flora, fauna and scenic beautiesand to restore, restock
protect and preserve the natural forests and such lands together with their flora and faunain
their natural state and condition, for the purpose of the education, pleasure, and recreation of the
publicOur environmental education and outdoor preservation initiatives serve to further that
mission on a daily basis.

As the largest landowner in Cook County, holding more than 68,000 acres of land in trust for its
citizens, the Districts attractions, programming and services are secondtonone. The District is
the landowner of the Brookfield Zoo and Chicago Botanic Garden, and also owns and operates
six nature centers throughout the County. With 10 golf courses, four driving ranges, three
aquatic centers, 10 sledding hills, five snowmobiling areas, 263 picnic groves, forty lakes and
ponds, and 300 miles of paved and unpaved trails for our visitors to enjoy, the District is the
premier provider of safe, enjoyable and affordable family fun in northeastern Illinois.
