Saints of India – Surdas

Times Music presents Music Album for Saint Surdas. Surdas 14781584 was a saint and a composer, who lived in Braj, near Mathura of India. Akbars books, AineAkbari and MunshiateAbulFazl, mention the life of this great Lord Krishna devotee and his composition of a hundred thousand songs, Sur Sagar, Ocean of Melody, written in praise of Lord Krishna. Only about 8000 of them survive today.

These songs, written in Brij Bhasha, a common mans dialect of Hindi language, actually raised the status of that dialect. The poetry is a vivid description of the childhood plays of lord Krishna.

Suridas was born blind, and at the age of 6, made to join a group of wandering religious musicians. One night, Lord Krishna came in his dream, and instructed him to go to Vrindavan, and become a saint, singing the Lords glory.

As a teenager, he met his guru, Saint Jagadguru Shrimad Vallabhacharya, and was trained in Hindu philosophy and meditation. As Surdas was a talented singer and composer, his guru asked him to compose the Bhagavad Lila, a collection of devotional poems, glorifying Lord Krishna and Radha. He became the resident singer at Srinath temple in Govardhan. Of the Masters eight disciples, the AshtaChaaps, he was considered as the first.

Pundits call him as the Sun in the Hindi Literature Sky. He was a proponent of Pushti Marg, the Shuddhadvaita school of Vaishnavism. It is a path that propagates the glory of the Lord, and differs from the usual path of Union.
